# Estate-seller pain points — reference + TroveSnap coverage map

The end-to-end process an estate-sale company follows (estatesales.net as the primary
platform), with the biggest pain points highlighted — then a **coverage map** showing what
TroveSnap addresses today, what's partial, and the **gaps we will enhance**.

Legend: ✅ **core** (a primary reason TroveSnap exists) · 🟡 **partial** (touched, room to
grow) · ❌ **gap** (not covered — enhancement candidate).

## Part 1 — Starting & running the business

| # | Step | Pain point / time sink | TroveSnap coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Research & validate the idea | **Consistent lead flow** (feast-or-famine) | 🟡 buyer marketplace drives demand; B2B lead-gen for the company itself is a **gap** |
| 2 | Legal & admin setup (LLC, EIN, tax) | Upfront paperwork; **sales-tax remittance across jurisdictions** | ❌ gap (out of current scope; tax-on-sale could inform reports) |
| 3 | Insurance & protections | Ongoing cost + renewal burden | ❌ gap |
| 4 | Tools, equipment, systems | Capital outlay; **inventory/POS software** | ✅ TroveSnap *is* the inventory/pricing/listing system; POS-interop, not replacement (D1) |
| 5 | Operations & staffing | **Hiring/training reliable staff — top burnout source** | ❌ gap (enhancement: SOP checklists, multi-user roles, role-scoped task lists) |
| 6 | Marketing & lead generation | **Client acquisition is a top-2 challenge**; estatesales.net tiers are costly | 🟡 marketplace + positioning; estatesales.net **import/export** via connectors |

## Part 2 — Conducting a sale

| Step | Pain point / time sink | TroveSnap coverage |
|---|---|---|
| 1 — Lead gen & contact | Volume of low-quality inquiries; pipeline | 🟡 lead/intake surfaces; qualification = gap |
| 2 — Free in-home consult | Travel + emotional/unrealistic clients | ❌ gap (scheduling could help) |
| 3 — Contract & scheduling | Custom contracts, signatures, deposits | ❌ gap (enhancement: contract templates + e-sign + scheduling) |
| **4 — Prep & inventory (1–3 wks) — THE BIGGEST TIME SINK** | Catalog **thousands of items**, **research values**, sort/clean/price every item, **stage the home** | ✅ **CORE** — vision scan → item record + condition + **价值/comparable pricing** is the headline value; **this is the pain TroveSnap exists to crush.** Staging guidance = 🟡 |
| 5 — Marketing & listing | **Taking/editing/uploading hundreds of photos + writing descriptions** | ✅ **CORE** — capture → auto item + copy-gen + listing; estatesales.net export. Bulk photo throughput = the UX bar |
| 6 — Final pre-sale setup | Short but stressful; last-minute issues | 🟡 workflow/checklist surface |
| 7 — Conduct the sale | Exhausting; crowds; **theft/security**; cash | 🟡 QR/buyer pages, demand; on-site ops + security = gap |
| 8 — Post-sale cleanup, accounting, payout | **Unsold-item disposal**; **reconciliation + client reports**; payout timing | 🟡 **disposition / demand-recovery** (unsold items) + analytics/**client reports**; physical haul + cash flow = gap |

---

## Cross-platform pains — the freemium wedge

A second lens (merged from the *Freemium — Ingestion Pain Analysis*, 2026-06-17): the pains
sellers feel across the **existing platforms** they already use. The thesis: **lead the free
tier with ingestion** — getting items *in* is the one pain every seller feels regardless of
platform, and **no incumbent solves it** (they advertise a sale or run an auction; none help
you catalog efficiently, and **none let the data back out**). *Figures below are directional
(third-party review aggregators), not validated against pilot data.*

| Theme | Where it bites | TroveSnap |
|---|---|---|
| **Manual per-item entry** (the universal wound) | every platform — **14–19 min/lot → 46–64 hrs for a 200-lot sale** | ✅ core — capture → draft item cards |
| **Locked data / no export** | EstateSales.net, MaxSold, Facebook — re-catalog channel by channel | ✅ wedge (intent) — *own your inventory, export anytime*; export/connectors planned (W4) |
| **Cross-listing / relisting / double-sell** | solo resellers — re-type into 5 marketplaces | 🟡 *catalog once → one source of truth* now; channel-export adapters need Auth+connectors (W4) |
| **Privacy / CCPA** | EstateSales.net won't remove interior-home photos | ❌→enhance — **PII/privacy scrubber at ingestion** (faces, SSNs, addresses → flag/blur before publish) turns a rival's weakness into a trust feature |
| **High / opaque fees** (30–45%, setup fees) | MaxSold, EstateSales.org | ✅ positioning — free to start; only premium AI is metered |
| **No self-edit** | MaxSold — email/call admin to fix listings | ✅ core — everything editable, nothing publishes without approval |
| **Reliability / support** | AuctionNinja — crashes, weeks of no support | (table stakes — reliability as a differentiator) |

**Personas (who feels what most):** estate-sale **agency** → cataloging labor at scale (kill 90+ desk hrs/sale); **solo reseller** → cross-listing / never double-sell; **garage/moving host** → no-bulk, just-snap-and-get-found (top-of-funnel, monetizes weakly). The revenue story lives with agencies + resellers.

**Merge actions taken:** PII/privacy scrubber + channel-export adapters + own-your-data export added to [web-enhancements](web-enhancements.md); the "catalog once, export, amplify" wedge reinforces the [feature breakdown](web-feature-breakdown.md). (The freemium landing/ad/OG/A-B copy in the source file is marketing strategy — kept there, not merged here.)

---

**Bottom line for the plan:** TroveSnap's contracts/waves squarely target the **#1 (inventory
+ pricing)** and **#4 (photo + listing)** pains — the two that drive the most owner burnout per
sale. The deliberate **gaps to enhance** (tracked in [ui-ux-enhancements](ui-ux-enhancements.md),
[web-enhancements](web-enhancements.md)) are: **lead-gen for the company**, **staffing/SOPs**,
**contracts/scheduling**, **reconciliation/payout depth**, and **on-site sale-day ops**. None are
contradicted by the current plan; they are additive surfaces once the core scan→list→sell loop is
contract-backed.
